Inspect the mechanical room floor drain for water rising; check the basement tub/shower as these are typically the first fixtures to back up with a main sewer clog
Stop running water throughout the house, especially large bodies of water such as laundry machine, dishwasher or releasing a tub full of water
Have a water alarm installed on your basement floor drain to catch any early back ups (this will not prevent a back up, but will notify you of water on the floor before the water spreads and causes property damage
Prevention of a main sewer back up is possible. While tree roots grow back over time and need maintenance, avoid flushing paper towels, baby wipes, dental floss, toys etc in the meantime. All these items can get stuck on the tree roots, or in a sag and potentially cause a blockage in your main sewer and create a backed up sewer line.
Do I have to replace my main sewer line if I have tree roots?:
No, if the main sewer is in good shape, with no cracks, sags and/or displaced pipe joints, tree roots are easily maintainable with a yearly cleaning and video inspection to control and monitor the root growth in your residential main sewer line
Why should we camera the line as well as clean?:
Main sewer camera inspections ensures nothing was missed in the sewer line cleaning, such as tree roots, grease or debris stuck in the line
Videos also show the shape of the line, any sags, displacements, and/or tree root growth to provide a full picture of your main sewer line
If you have tree roots in the line, we recommend a follow up camera and auger service in approximately 1 year to determine if the roots have grown back, how much and if so, complete an maintenance to clear the roots away
